London Local Plans are borough-level planning policy documents that guide how development is assessed in each local authority area. They sit alongside the London Plan, which sets city-wide planning policy for Greater London and forms part of the statutory development plan for London. What is a Local Plan?

A Local Plan is the main planning policy document used by a local planning authority to guide development and determine planning applications. In London, borough Local Plans must be in general conformity with the London Plan, which sets the Mayor’s strategic planning framework for Greater London.

For developers, architects, planning consultants, sustainability consultants and energy assessors, Local Plans are important because they often contain local requirements for energy strategies, BREEAM, carbon reduction, whole life carbon, circular economy, heat networks, flood risk, sustainable drainage systems, overheating and retrofit.

Where to check London Local Plan status

For the latest London-wide Local Plan status, use the GLA Local Plans status map. This dashboard shows whether each London planning authority’s Local Plan is adopted, under review, at Regulation 18, Regulation 19, examination in public, or recently adopted.
